Summary

This topic describes the economic and social consequences of unequal distributions of income and wealth. It explains how some inequality can create incentives for work, investment and innovation, but how large or persistent inequality can reduce human capital formation, weaken aggregate demand, increase public spending, lower living standards for poorer households and threaten social cohesion. The trade-off between equity and efficiency guides policy choices about redistribution.
